San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a municipality in the province of Madrid, located in the northwest of the region, on the southeast slope of the Sierra de Guadarrama, at the foot of Mount Abantos and Las Machotas, 47 km from Madrid. It is head of the homonymous judicial party. It is popularly called El Escorial de Arriba, to differentiate it from the neighboring town of El Escorial, which, for its part, is designated as El Escorial de Abajo. Within its municipal term are the Monastery of El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen.
The town was founded in the times of Carlos III, in the 18th century, and constituted as a municipality in the 19th century, when it had its first mayor. It emerged as a split from El Escorial, where Felipe II built the Monastery of El Escorial at the end of the 16th century and, through the annexation of the adjoining estates, the Royal Site of the same name. In the segregated part were the main buildings and places of this Royal Site, including the Monastery, which is currently, therefore, in the term of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Hence, the aforementioned monument is also called the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
The Monastery and the Royal Site were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on November 2, 1984, with the name of “El Escorial, Monastery and Site”.
