The Count of Casal to whom the square was dedicated was called Manuel Escrivá de Romaní y de la Quintana, born and died in Madrid. He lived his life between 1871 and 1954 and was an academic at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and a politician.

The most emblematic building in the area around the square is the Claridge Hotel, which a few years ago has been completely refurbished. The building was inaugurated in 1967 and did not earn its fourth star until undergoing its recent renovation.
