Lavapiés is a neighbourhood in the city of Madrid, located within the larger neighbourhood of Embajadores, in the Centro district of the capital.
In the 18th century it was also known as the Avapiés neighbourhood due to the influence of the sainetes of Don Ramón de la Cruz, returning to its old name in the 19th century. It has been considered an icon of “Madrid traditionalism” and “manolería”. Its heart is marked by the Plaza de Lavapiés and its most important artery was Calle Real de Lavapiés. Although it does not appear as an official administrative entity, Lavapiés is considered the area between El Rastro, Tirso de Molina and the Reina Sofía Museum.
The oldest documents on the existence of inhabitants in what is now the neighbourhood, based on documents from the archives of the Madrid City Council, say that the origin of the Lavapiés neighbourhood would be in the commercial settlements outside the city walls at the end of the 15th century related to the royal road to Toledo and the road to Atocha, and the existence of the old slaughterhouse in what is now El Rastro.
The very personality of the neighbourhood, historically an indigenous nucleus in Madrid and generator of its own traditionalism, seems to be reflected in the countercultural aesthetic that the fusion of cultures and ethnicities has favoured since the last third of the 20th century among its residents. All this allows some analysts to propose the coordinates, characteristics and manifestations that this neighbourhood presents in the 21st century. Among the examples of street art that this phenomenon produces, the different trends of mural painting and graffiti could be highlighted, which in some places, such as the abandoned Tobacco Factory, have come to generate a spontaneous succession of examples of this type of expression denigrated by some and defended by others.
It is a very contemporary neighbourhood and well known by locals and even tourists. There are several communities that have contributed to the culture of Lavapiés and that is the reason why it has become popular in recent years. If you take a walk through Lavapiés, you will find multiple examples of multiculturalism in the shops, restaurants, bars and art.
In this neighbourhood, you will find, very close by, the most important museums in Madrid such as El Prado and Thyssen. In addition, in Lavapiés, there are different Cultural Centres such as: The National Dramatic Centre in the square, the Spanish Theatre, the Casa Encendida, El Price, the National Classical Theatre Company, the Sala Mirador and the Jacob’s Staircase. It should not be overlooked that the UNED is also located in this neighbourhood, in a rebuilt building in the centre of Madrid on the site of the old Pías de San Fernando schools and the site of its old Church, a modern building, the result of an agreement with the Madrid City Council ceded to the UNED for a period of 25 years.
There is a wide variety of restaurants, with different popular restaurants and bars such as “El Melos”: an institution in the world of croquettes and ham with cheese.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that important people have been and are residents of Lavapiés such as Picasso and Pepe Isbert among others.
